For my husband's sake, I did not blog about how he ended his winter basketball season with the Super Ball Hog Ninjas 0-8, but I think he's moved past it now. Really, he had a great attitude about it, albeit a bit disappointed. But he's since started the spring league, and five of his former teammates decided to stick around for the next season, the outcome of which is yet to be determined. Will it be another crushing defeat or a triumphant comeback? Aye, time will tell (say that sentence with an Irish accent).
They lost their first game of the spring season 66-45, but at halftime the score was within one point, so they held their own for awhile. The Ninjas finally won their first game last week, beating a team who didn't make it into the "low" league because it was full. They defeated this team 85-37, a very similar reflection of the Ninja's first game ever when they lost 67-22. I did not witness the victory, but when Matt came home and told me they won, I was torn emotionally. Thrilled for Matt, of course! Relieved they finally won a game, you betcha! It was a confidence booster for sure! But I felt bad for the other team...the Ninjas WHOOPED them, gave them the same crushing defeat as they themselves had experienced...they showed NO MERCY! "Why did they have to score so many points on them?", I contemplated. I really felt sorry for this other team.
To his credit, Matt handled the whoopin's he experienced like a true sportsman, never complaining, and never once did he pout saying, "I just wish they didn't stomp us out." So this is my own weird, messed up notion of sportsmanship: when winning, a team should kindly not obliterate the other team! Matt says I don't know what true sportsmanship is, that teams never compromise a game (i.e. miss shots intentionally or run slower or guard less) just to soften a loss. I guess in my head that makes sense, but my heart says something else, because after Matt's blow-outs, I figured the Ninjas would be kind enough to not do that to another team; but instead, they sure strut their stuff! It was probably all cooped up inside 'em after all this time, and I'm sure it felt good. But really...85-37, was that really necessary? It just seems a little over the top to me. Am I really all that whacked? Are blowouts wrong? I'm probably being all girly about this, and somewhere in those big ol' sports rulebooks are rules against what I'm suggesting. But as a wife sitting there watching her husband's team get blown out of the water, I am a little more compassionate towards the other teammates and their families viewing the slaughter. I had the slightest inkling of hope that my husband wouldn't be the one doing the slaughtering. Maybe that's why I was never in sports.
Greetings, dear readers! It is so good to have you visit this blog, and I'm glad you're here! Thanks for reading.
Would you be surprised if I told you that I think about blogging many hours each day? Granted, I'm not working and have more time to blog, but I'm not just looking to waste my time here. There's lots of other things I do and can do, but I'm simply trying to emphasize that blogging is becoming less of a hobby and more of an investment of time and energy because I love it so much. I lay in bed thinking about it. The same feeling I described when I first started blogging a year ago remains: I wake up like a little girl on Christmas morning, so excited, knowing that I'll get to think about bloggy type stuff, or write a post, or play with the designs. Questions are always running through my mind about it: What topic can I write about? How can I draw more readers? What would my readers like to know? What keeps my readers coming back? How can I make it more interesting? What is it going take to get my friend, Corrie, to leave a comment, cause I know she reads this thing nearly every day? (Just teasin', Corrie! I just wanted to put your name in a post today). So I don't know where this blogging thing is going to lead, but I certainly enjoy it!
Not sure if you caught it in the above paragraph, but this blog was created nearly one year ago! On April 17, we will commemorate Ink Pots' 1 year anniversary. So, this gives you time to gear up for a new contest in celebration of our one year blogoversary! Stay tuned for some exciting instructions and your chance to win a nice little prize. By the way, this nice little prize is coming out of my $30 a month allowance. I'm saving up my money to shower love on you!
Well, March Madness is over. I kept my second to last place (29 out of 30) in the small $5 bracket I entered. Pathetic. Mac and Julie made it to Saturday's Final Four game, and as I mentioned, Julie is a huge North Carolina fan. Sadly, as most of us well know, Carolina lost to Kansas, a "bitter team" as Julie describes. An emotional loss it was, and so before leaving the Alamodome on Saturday night, Mac and Julie sold their Monday night tickets to what some are saying was the most exciting and best national championship game in NCAA history. I went to San Antonio Monday to hang out with them all day, and we didn't even watch 10 seconds of the game. The channel was passed by incessantly. Like I said, NCU's loss to Kansas was a real disappointment. Which I can understand: you fly all this way, just knowing, feeling it deep down inside, your team is going to make it to the championship game, and better yet, you're actually there to watch it! It would be difficult. We can't even call Mac at least 24 hours after A&M looses because we know he'll be in a bad mood. Die hard fans, y'all. Die hard.
But selfishly, I'm glad they didn't end up going. That meant I got to spend more time with them, and my Daddy had 3 of his 4 chickies to greet him when he got home from work. It also enabled us to have a nice homemade spaghetti dinner that my mom made. Earlier that afternoon, I also got to see Julie's ecstatic response to getting Little Caesar's pizza! No longer a chain in North Carolina, and too cheap for D.C., Little Caesar's pizza is a rare sight for Julie, but still her favorite, bringing back fond memories of childhood. A large cheese pizza and crazy bread to go, she munched on it while my mom, Mac and I ate burgers and corn dogs at Longhorn Cafe for lunch. Before playing several games of Settlers of Catan, Mac, Julie and I had a lively discussion about something I'll blog about in the next few days. It was so fun to be with them for the day!
Again, thanks for stopping by and have a great day!
Our family, because of my brother, are TX A&M fans all the way. Even though Matt attended UT Austin for his masters degree, we tend to overlook that flaw because we love him so much. And since Julie is now family, we have now also become University of North Carolina Tar Heels fans, simply out of love for her. I don't know much about them, but may I say, bless my pea-pickin' heart for trying! Being from North Carolina and a UNC grad, Julie absolutely loves them! It's up for debate which of the two have more school spirit: Mac for A&M or Julie for UNC. I'm scared to vote.
I am greatly enjoying participating in a $5 March Madness bracket that Julie set up, despite that I'm in second to last place. I also chose UNC to win the championship, which I genuinely believe they will do this year, and so do Mac and Julie. So much so that I actually got a phone call yesterday from Mac saying that he and Julie are coming to San Antonio this weekend as they were able to get tickets to the Final Four and the championship game! Only my brother could have a network of friends that receives UNC season tickets who were willing to give them to him at face value so he could see family and go to the games. Only my brother. And Julie is just as much of a networker, so they have a double portion coming their way!
While the two of them are at the tournament of all tournaments, me, Matt and my parents will get as comfortable as we can on our couches and watch the games on television like the rest of the country, looking into the crowds seeing if we can spot our UNC fans. The best of all: Mac and Julie will be here in a couple of days, and we will get to see their precious faces in person, and hopefully beat them at a game of Settlers of Catan!
And here's a shout out to UNC: GO TAR HEELS!
